Manchester Central: The Ultimate Exhibitor Logistics Guide
Manchester Central is a premier, historic venue. However, its city-centre location and Grade II listed status mean it has stricter logistical requirements than modern "out-of-town" NEC-style venues. This guide provides the essential data you need for a smooth show.
1. Access & Loading Logistics
Address for Navigation: Windmill St, Manchester M2 3GX. Loading Bay Entry: Albion Street (M1 5JB).
- Voyage Control (Mandatory): Manchester Central operates a strict vehicle booking system. You must book your unloading/loading slot via the venue's Voyage Control portal at least 48 hours in advance. If you arrive without a slot, security will likely redirect you to wait off-site.
- The Ramp: The loading bay is accessed via a steep ramp. Ensure all loads in your vehicle are properly secured for an incline.
- PPE Requirements: During build-up and breakdown, the hall is a hard-hat and high-vis zone. Access will be denied if you do not have a high-vis vest and steel-toed boots.
- Trolleys: The venue does not provide trolleys for exhibitor use. Ensure you bring your own or arrange for a porter service in advance.
2. Power, Internet & Utilities
- Mains Power: Floor space does not include power. Orders must be placed through the official electrical contractor (usually listed in your exhibitor manual).
- Pulse Tip: Always order 20% more power than your calculated total (e.g., if your tech uses 1.8kW, order a 3kW drop) to prevent surge trips.
- WiFi vs. Ethernet: While the venue offers free public WiFi, it is prone to congestion during peak hours. For presentations, live demos, or payment terminals, we strongly recommend ordering a dedicated hardwired internet drop.
- Water & Waste: If your stand requires plumbing, these services are restricted to specific floor ducts. Check your stand location against the venue's service duct map before finalizing your design.
3. Storage & Site Rules
- On-Site Storage: There is no storage for empty crates, pallets, or packaging within the venue. You must arrange for your contractor to take these away or hire off-site storage.
- Waste Management: Manchester Central has a "Clean Floor" policy. Any waste (carpet off-cuts, packaging, etc.) left on the aisles or your stand post-build will incur a significant removal fee (typically starting at £300+).
- Rigging: All overhead rigging must be performed by the venue's official rigging partner. Self-rigging of banners or lighting from the ceiling is strictly prohibited.
4. Where to Stay
Choosing the right accommodation can significantly impact your team's energy levels. Here are the top recommendations based on proximity to Manchester Central:
Closest (The "Zero Commute" Options)
- The Midland Hotel: Directly across from the venue. A historic, 4-star luxury option that is ideal for hosting clients after hours.
- Premier Inn Manchester Central: Located right next to the venue. A reliable, high-value option for those who want to be as close as possible without the premium price tag of a boutique hotel.
- Leonardo Hotel Manchester Central: Just a 3-minute walk away. Modern, reliable, and specifically geared toward business travellers.
Modern & Stylish
- The Edwardian Manchester (A Radisson Collection Hotel): Located in the Free Trade Hall, literally steps from the venue. High-end spa facilities for post-show recovery.
- Motel One Manchester-Royal Exchange: Stylish, budget-friendly design hotel. About an 8-minute walk, offering a great balance of cost and comfort.
Apartment Style (Best for Long Builds)
- Native Manchester (Ducie Street Warehouse): A bit further away (15-minute walk/5-minute taxi), but offers full kitchen facilities which are excellent for teams on-site for 3+ days.
- Staycity Aparthotels (St Peters Square): Only a 5-minute walk. Ideal if you prefer a living area to work in during the evenings.
5. Technical Setup & Content
To ensure your digital content displays correctly on the hall floor:
- Ambient Light: The Central Hall has a large glass roof. High-brightness screens (500+ nits) are recommended to avoid washout from natural light.
- Aspect Ratios: Ensure all video content is rendered at 16:9 (Standard) or 32:9 (Ultrawide) depending on your display hire.
- Testing: If providing your own media, test it on a physical screen—not just a monitor—before arriving on-site.
6. Local Information for Teams
- Parking: The NCP Great Northern (M3 4EE) or NCP Manchester Central (directly underneath the venue) are the closest options. Use the "Pre-book" feature on the NCP website for lower day rates.
- Food & Coffee: * Quick Bite: Federal Café (Deansgate) for coffee/brunch.
- Team Dinner: Albert's Schloss (Peter St) for a celebratory atmosphere.
- Supplies: There is a Sainsbury's Local and a Tesco Express on Deansgate for last-minute essentials (tape, batteries, snacks).
